Adele and The Wanted top charts, as Amy Winehouse sales rocket
Singer Adele and pop group The Wanted have kept their number one positions in the British album and singles charts, as the sales of Amy Winehouse's recordings have rocketed, following her tragic death on Saturday.
British soul singer Amy Winehouse was found dead at her Camden home on Saturday, 23 July. Numerous artists paid tribute to the late singer, including her producer Mark Ronson, who called her his "musical soulmate". Amy Winehouse was only 27 years old. British police said that the cause of her death was yet "unexplained". The troubled, but highly talented singer made her last appearance last week when she took to the stage to join her goddaughter Dionne Bromfield.
According to the Official Charts Company, the sales of Amy Winehouse's albums increased by 37 times and those of her singles by 23 times, following the announcement of the soul singer's death. Although the rise in sales started happening only a few hours before the monitored period ended, it was enough to send Winehouse's 2006 album "Back to Black" to number 59 and its title track to number 81 in the UK charts. Martin Talbot of the Official Chart Company indicated that an even higher increase was expected over the following week.
Adele's hugely successful "21" album has kept its number one position in the UK charts. It is the 18th week the album has spent in the top position in Britain. R&B star Beyonce's "4" is at number two, while Adele's debut album "19" is third. "Deleted Scenes from the Cutting Room Floor" by Caro Emerald is at number four in the charts, while Lady Gaga's "Born This Way" is in fifth place. "Sorry for the Party Rocking" by LMFAO is the highest new entry at number eight.
"Glad You Came", the latest single by British-Irish boyband The Wanted, is the number one song in the UK for the second week in a row. The top five remained the same, with "Louder" by DJ Fresh at number two, Ed Sheeran's "The A Team" in third place, Beyonce's "Best Thing I Never Had" in fourth, and "How We Roll" by Loick Essien at number five. The highest new entry was "Down with the Trumpet" by Rizzle Kicks at number 22. Tracks by Tinie Tempah and Chase & Status also entered the British charts over the past week.
