Katy Perry nominated for nine MTV Video Music Awards
Singer Katy Perry has received nine nominations for this year's MTV Video Music Awards. Adele and Kanye West are nominated for seven awards each, while Lady Gaga will compete only in three categories at the star-studded ceremony, which will take place on 28 August.
Pop star Katy Perry leads the nomination count for the 2011 MTV Video Music Awards with nine nods, for her "Firework", “Last Friday Night (T.G.I.F.)” and "E.T." music videos. Perry 's "Firework" will compete for video of the year with Adele's "Rolling in the Deep", Bruno Mars's “Grenade”, Beastie Boys' “Make Some Noise” and Tyler the Creator's "Yonkers".
British superstar singer Adele, whose "21" album has spent a record number of weeks on top of the British and American charts, has seven nominations for her video "Rolling in the Deep". Kanye West also received seven nominations, for "E.T.", a collaboration with Katy Perry, as well as for "Power" and "All of the Lights". Singer Bruno Mars is nominated in four categories, while R&B star Beyonce, rockers Thirty Seconds to Mars, and rappers Eminem and Nicki Minaj have three nominations each.
Superstar Lady Gaga was last year's top winner, picking up eight awards, including that for video of the year (for "Bad Romance"). But this year she is nominated only in three categories: best female video, for her single "Born This Way", and best choreography and art direction for "Judas". In the former category, she will face competition from Beyonce with "Run the World (Girls)", Nicki Minaj with "Super Bass", Adele with "Rolling in the Deep" and Katy Perry with "Firework".
In the best male video category, Bruno Mars's "Grenade" will compete with Cee Lo Green's "F*** You", Eminem's "Love the Way You Lie", Kanye West's "All of the Lights" and Justin Bieber's "U Smile". Mars is also nominated in the best pop video category, together with Adele, Katy Perry, Pitbull and Britney Spears, while the nominees for best rock video are The Black Keys, Cage the Elephant, Mumford & Sons, Foster the People and Foo Fighters. The best new artist award will be disputed between Wiz Khalifa, Big Sean, Tyler the Creator, Kreayshawn and Foster the People. The award show will take place on August 28, at the Nokia Theatre in Los Angeles. The winners in each category are chosen by the public, who can vote on MTV's website.
