Adele climbs to the top of US singles chart
British superstar Adele has jumped to first place on the Billboard Hot 100 chart.
The soul singer has been having great success in the album charts, setting a few records both in her native Britain and the United States. Thursday, she began her reign on the US singles chart as well.
"Rolling in the Deep" by Adele, the number two song last week, replaced "E.T." by Katy Perry at the top of the chart.
Perry has no reason to be upset. Her single led the charts for the last five weeks. But, what's more important, the pop star has spent an entire year in the top ten, which no other artist has done before.
Perry's 2010 single "California Gurls" entered the chart at number two exactly a year ago. The hit song was number one for six weeks. Since then, Perry hasn't left the top ten, due to her songs "Teenage Dream" and "Firework", and now "E.T.".
"Rolling in the Deep" is only Adele's second charting single in the US. The previous one was "Chasing Pavements", taken from "19", the singer's first album. "Rolling in the Deep" appears on the hugely successful "21" album, which is expected to remain at the top of the US album chart for the eight week in a row.
"On the Floor" by singer/actress Jennifer Lopez is at number three, after climbing four places. Lopez, a judge on the extremely successful "American Idol", performed her track on last week's show, which could account for the climb in the charts.
"Just Can't Get Enough" by much loved hip hop band the Black Eyed Peas kept its fourth place from last week.
Singer-songwriter Bruno Mars remained fifth with "The Lazy Song". "Till the World Ends" by former pop princess Britney Spears lost three places and now sits at number six.
Country band Lady Antebellum is also having a great week after appearing on "American Idol". Their latest single "Just a Kiss" entered the chart at number seven, setting a new record among country artists. No other single by a country band has ever debuted so high in the chart. "Just a Kiss" is taken from the Nashville group's upcoming album.
The other tracks in the top ten are: "Give Me Everything" by rapper Pitbull, "S&M" by R'n'B star Rihanna, and "Look at Me Now" by her controversial ex-boyfriend Chris Brown.
